With the famous painting “The Last Day of Pompeii” he changed the entrenched ideas about the tasks of historical painting, among the first to break the usual canons of classicist art. With his portrait painting, he paved the way for realism. The book tells about the work of the master, about his life, rich in events and meetings – friendship linked the artist with Pushkin and Glinka, Gogol and Kukolnik.
